Prescription for Health: Exercise

Maria Lauren – Fitness Champion – TV Host

Research has shown that just two fifteen minute exercise routines can make a positive impact on your life. For instance, thirty minutes a day, five days a week of aerobic and muscle conditioning exercise can prevent Type 2 Diabetes by half. You can reap health benefits by walking with light weights of ½ or 1 pound apiece. The weights that wrap around your hands are best to use so the blood doesn’t pool to your hands. Doing arm movements while walking can put you in the aerobic, fat burning zone faster, especially when you move your arms above your head. Of course, your body is a weight too, so when you walk you are benefiting your bones and preventing osteoporosis. The combination of aerobic and muscle conditioning exercises has always been a part of my daily routine, even when I traveled on the road as an entertainer. A Powerful LIFE at Kaiser Permanente: This is where I serve as a Lifestyle Educator while teaching a variety of fitness classes. We are pushing the activity of walking for better fitness and health. Walking increases blood flow through the blood stream which helps your natural immune system. Studies at the Appalachian State University show that walking can prevent the common cold. It’s doable to fit fifteen minutes of exercise two times a day either in the morning, the evening, at lunch or instead of a coffee break. Put walking into your schedule. Walking helps you feel good and in most cases it helps lower the level of depression too. Walk with a buddy. It’s fun! Find support at Everybody Walk

Kaiser Permanente diligently spreads the news about health issues. In 2010, the KP research team printed thousands of articles to widely read publications including the New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times and US World Today.

Although Medicare had significantly cut the payments to Kaiser Permanente, the Southern California branch has had one of the best financial years ever. Yeah, team!

Remembering a Powerful LIFE, Jack LaLanne: This fitness guru has inspired generations of people to live a healthier life. He was a pioneer in the fitness field. His television series prompted me to pursue the path of health and fitness throughout my life. In January 2010, I wrote about meeting Jack LaLanne, who was full of vitality. His motivating spirit will always be with us.

Yours in health,

Alberici Sisters with Jack LaLanne celebrating his 95th Birthday: Maria Lauren, Jack LaLanne, Linda Eichberg

The beginning of another year and a time to make plans to map out your powerful life! My parents were the GPS that guided me on a positive path but along my journey, there were other motivational people whose purposeful life continue to be a powerful beacon in my life, today.

My sister and I, Alberici Sisters, grew up watching Jack LaLanne on TV. The Jack LaLanne Show was the longest-running health and fitness show in history, airing from 1951 to 1985. Recently, my sister, Linda Eichberg and I sang “Happy Birthday” to Jack LaLanne for his 95th birthday and led participants in 95 “Jumping Jacks” at the Los Angeles Council Chambers. Our enthusiasm shook up the room and Jack’s sense of humor had us all laughing. Now, that’s a prescription for good health!

Jack LaLanne’s TV show inspired my family to keep healthy and fit. Coincidentally, both my father and Jack LaLanne suffered from illness when they were young boys. That motivated my father to raise his big family of nine children on freshly squeezed vegetable juice and daily exercise. We kept these healthy family values, even before it was popular.

Being children in the 1960s, we suffered ridicule from our peers for bringing whole wheat bread to school. This was during the ‘wonder bread’ or white bread era. We were not rich but my father and mother were diligent in their struggle to feed all their children healthy and wholesome food. They often told us, “You are what you eat” and “Health is wealth.” These statements were a positive influence that guided me to be the first woman to win two National Fitness Titles, all in one year. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a former Mr. Olympia was one of the judges and handed me my trophy.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.: This month we celebrate another “Powerful Life,” Martin Luther King Jr. said, “The time is always right to do what is right.”

Become the change that you want to see in your life. Strive to be consistent, trusting in the power that created you. Nobody is perfect, so there will be little failures and little successes, even little miracles. I believe in miracles. Do you?
